Surveon NVR1000 and NVR500 series are an ideal solution of IP video surveillance for small and medium businesses that require video monitoring with up to 32/16 network cameras. Video from all the cameras on the networks can be accessed at local or via remote client application software over the Internet for real-time video monitoring, recording, and exporting, etc.

NVR500/1000 comes with remote and local access design. It is suitable for small to medium-scale applications, such as Retail, Restaurant, Industry, Health care etc. In a small/medium-scale installation (with 32 network cameras or less), a single NVR500/1000 will be able to manage all those cameras. With the capability of flexible data storage expansion, more storage capacity of NVR1000 can be expanded with an 8-bay external disk array subsystem.

For your reference, here is an example of chain retail stores. The geographical topology and the configuration structure in this example are shown as below.

Scenario: there are 11 chain retail stores and up to 32 cameras are installed in each store. The cameras installed in one location can be efficiently managed by either one NVR500 or NVR1000 in each store (depends on the number of cameras installed), so that the users can do real-time video monitoring and video recording locally in each retail store. In addition, besides the local access in each location, all the NVR500/1000 can also be access remotely via client PCs over the networks. For a retail store in general, it only requires to keep the recorded video for no longer than 7 days. NVR500/1000’s internal storage in most cases should be plenty enough to cover the recorded video volume. The following diagram shows an IP video surveillance system for the chain retail stores design:

  1. Deployment
  2. Recording Calculation
  3. Network Bandwidth Utilization
  4. Remote Client

The configuration outlined as below:

Locations

  • 11 existing stores

Number of network cameras

  • 5 of 11 stores need 32 indoor network cameras
  • 6 of 11 stores need 12 indoor network cameras

Recording

  • 24 hours of recording a day
  • 10 fps continuous recording
  • CIF resolution
  • Retention of video for 7 days

Video Monitoring & Recording Access

  • Local network and camera viewing (local monitor in NVR)
  • ADSL for remote monitor via client software at headquarter

The amount of required storage is determined by the following formula:

Storage (B) = bitrate/8 * number of cameras * time period (sec)
  • bitrate: the rate at which the data is transmitted in bits per second
  • number of cameras: total number of cameras managed by the server
  • time period (sec): total number of recording in seconds
For a single NVR connecting with 32 network cameras:

Storage =512K/8 * 32 cam * (7 days * 24 hrs * 60 min * 60 sec)= 1.2 TB

For a single NVR connecting with 12 cameras:

Storage =512K/8 * 12 * (7 days * 24 hrs * 60 min * 60 sec)= 0.4 TB

Therefore, a NVR1000 should have at least 2 x 1TB HDDs for the location with 32 cameras installed; a NVR500 should have at least 1TB HDD for the location with 12 cameras.

The system is deployed in a LAN (intranet) environment; therefore the network bandwidth consumption is not a critical factor.

Network (bps) = bit rate * number of cameras

  • Number of cameras: total number of cameras supported by the server
  • Bit rate: is the rate at which the data is transmitted in bits per second

For the local network in each store with 12 cameras:

Network =512K * 12 cam = 6.1 Mbps

For the local network in each store with 32 cameras:

Network =512K * 32 = 16.3 Mbps

For the Headquarter, it only needs to access the data from each store via internet. Therefore, the internet bandwidth of Headquarter should be 1Mbps at least.

The PC throughput depends on the following factors:

  • CPU clock speed
  • Memory size
  • Network throughput
  • Disk I/O throughput

Since there are many factors that affect the server throughput, the recommended hardware is,

Processor Intel Core2 Duo 2.0GHz, or higher
